Provocateur - Berlin

Provocateur+Berlin.jpg

A Berlin tribute to the turbulent 20's in Paris. Think burlesque, thick velvet, chic boudoirs, copper accents and more of that. For once we left Berlin’s raw edges for what they are and we spoiled ourselves with haute vintage at Provocateur.

The otherwise neat West Berlin just got cooler. And that might just have to do with the opening of Provocateur, the latest opening of the Design Hotels of the World family in Berlin. 58 sexy guest rooms, an internationally acclaimed cocktail bar and a world-class French-Oriental restaurant is what puts West Berlin back on the map again.

To get that rather un-Berlin-ish look, the owners of the Gekko Group (of which Provocateur is a part) have teamed up with Saar Zafrir, a Dutch designer who has also done Sir Albert and the Max Brown hotels in Amsterdam. Their mission? To wrap the golden 20's from Paris in detail in an intimate hotel. And boy did that work out. From a discreet entrance to deep red curtains draped in front of golden walls and from elegant tin ceilings, an antique cage lift and intimate corners to soft velvet sofas in dark red and petrol blue. Everything breathes the bygone glory days. Add dim lights, charming staff and (especially on weekends) a glammed-up crowd and your joie de vivre adventure is on.

Dark red and petrol blue it is, also in Provocateur’s 58 rooms. Varying from the smaller ‘petit’s’ and ‘intimate's’ to the spacious 65m2 ‘Maison Suite’. All come with a king size bed, Nespresso machine and Marshall speaker. The chic bathrooms are tiled in black marble and fitted with a copper rain shower and Dead Clean products . Book a Deluxe room or higher and Provocateur will throw in a free-standing bathtub.
Notable is the Provocateur Mode in all rooms. A switch that will dim the lights, starts up a sexy playlist while pin-up reflections are projected into a corner on the wall. Flickering and in black and white. Totally 20's.

Restaurant Golden Phoenix is part of Provocateur but at the same time a destination in itself. Berlin-acclaimed chef The Duc Ngo is in charge here with a menu full of Oriental dishes with a French twist. After dinner you can easily move on to the adjacent Provocateur Bar - recently voted the best hotel bar of 2019. The evenings are here from Thursday to Saturday. Expect a diverse audience of creative locals, hotel guests and glammed up West Berliners.

Provocateur may be somewhat deep in West, hotspots like Cafe am Neuen See , western Kurfürstendamm and Bikinihaus are all less than a 15 minutes bike ride from the hotel.
